On the road to COP15, we invite you to discover the events related to the preparation of COP15, along with the involvement of Belgian experts in this context through short interviews. The COP15 was initially planned in Kunming, but due to strict covid measures in China, the event took place in Montreal.
Key steps in 2022 on the road to COP15
- 03 - 05 December 2022 - Fifth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, took place in Montreal, Canada
- 29 June - 1 July 2022 - Technical meeting on indicators for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework took place in Bonn, Germany
- 21 - 26 June 2022 - Fourth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, took place in Nairobi, Kenya
- 14-19 March 2022 - The resumed sessions of the twenty-fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 24), the third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 3) and the third meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (WG2020-3), originally scheduled for 12-28 January 2022 took place on 14-29 March 2022, at the International Conference Center Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland.
Key steps in 2020 on the road to COP15
- 17-20 March 2020 - The CBD’s Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Digital Sequence Information met online – rather than in Montreal, Canada – to form recommendations for the post-2020 biodiversity framework.
- In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, on 23 March 2020, CBD Acting Executive Secretary Elizabeth Mrema announced that the dates for this meeting would be adjusted. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place from 15-28 October 2020, in Kunming, China.
- On 15 July 2020, the CBD announced the meeting would take place from 17-30 May 2021.
- 17-22 August 2020 - The SBSTTA-24 meeting has been tentatively moved from May to August in Montreal, where it will focus on COP15 and the new framework.
- 22-29 August 2020 - The final rescheduling of SBI-3, focusing on issues including resource-mobilisation, capacity-building and progress-monitoring in the context of the new framework.
- 20 September 2020 - The UN general assembly is scheduled to convene a Leader’s Biodiversity Summit of heads of state and government in New York to give COP15 a political boost.
* Initially, the COP15 was supposed to take place in Kunming, China, but due to the country’s zero-Covid policy, the COP15 will happen in Montreal, Canada.
